[For bsdfemslashweek on tumblr (only I don't go there anymore): day 1]

I'm sorry this is so short I wanted it to be longer but I've been helping clean out my basement all day and I am exhausted, let me live sobs

Sitting next to Gin on a park bench in the moonlight feels almost surreal.

When Higuchi had found out that Gin is, in fact, a girl - and even wears soft, flowing dresses and frees her hair and wears light makeup when she's not working, so different from how she is on the job, though all of those revelations came later - she had almost wanted to thank Dazai, the apparent traitor, simply for bringing something so vital to her attention. A female friend around her age, she thought, but at first nothing had really changed much, since Higuchi knew, herself, that suddenly changing how she acted around Gin completely would be... Rather selfish. So she'd worked slowly, treating Gin basically the same as how she used to with just a few minor differences. She'd even been worried that being Gin's superior in rank would make her feel forced, so it had been rough trying to get friendlier with her without being too friendly, and also not letting it feel forced–

Anyway. Thankfully, Gin is smart, more so than Higuchi thinks of herself as being, and she'd clued in to what Higuchi was trying so awkwardly to do. Even more thankfully than that, she'd been open to the idea, and had offered that they go somewhere together sometime. They started easily enough; a shopping trip, because they both needed some heavier clothing as Fall approaches, which had turned to lunch since they were already out together, and Higuchi found herself enjoying it greatly. She'd thought, even then, that after all, not just any female friend would do.

They didn't talk about Gin's brother, either, which Higuchi was glad for. She'd worried she wouldn't be able to control her own curiousity and might get a bit nosy, but thankfully the temptation hadn't even risen; Gin was interesting and funny and a great conversation partner all on her own.

All in all, it had been a really lovely outing, so Higuchi had asked if they could go again, sometime, do something else together, too.

She's pretty sure at some point they... Maybe started becoming more like dates? But she's not sure about that, and so here she sits now, fiddling with her scarf, glancing down at Gin's hand now and then. They're not even talking anymore, really, and Gin mostly just seems to be watching the few people passing by this park this late at night; whether she's assessing if they're threats or just likes people watching, Higuchi isn't certain.

"... Higuchi," Gin says, eventually, startling Higuchi more than she'd care to admit, fingers gripping her scarf harder as she jolts in her seat; although they're not working and although Gin's started using her name like that recently while they're out like this, it still manages to get to her every time, "are you alright?"

"Ah, I'm... I'm fine, sorry, Gin-chan. Was I spacing out?"

"Not really, it's just... You keep looking at my hand."

Ah, caught in the act. She's about to try to stumble through some sort of apology, but before she can do more than stammer a bit, uselessly, Gin reaches up with that same hand, catching Higuchi's in her scarf, pulling it free of the fabric and giving it a squeeze that does funny things to Higuchi's pulse. "... You can hold it, if you want."

"I do," Higuchi blurts, feeling her face heat up immediately afterwards. Groaning just a bit at herself, she gives Gin's hand a gentle squeeze instead, glancing away as she notices a slightly-playful grin on Gin's lips. God that look warms Higuchi's body more than the new, warmer clothes she's wearing ever could. "... You know what I mean!"

"I do," Gin says, much calmer, but not without a hint of amusement, "and it's fine. I said you can, right?"

"Yeah... Um, I've been meaning to ask," Higuchi says, deciding that, well, she's already flustered, why not just go right ahead and ask, "are we...? Um, are these, I guess, uh, are we..." ... Okay, maybe not.

Gin snickers softly, but gives Higuchi's hand another gentle squeeze. "Dating?"

Higuchi nods, finally turning her gaze back to Gin, biting her bottom lip. She can't help but be nervous; she'd never expected herself to fall for another woman, and she worries that maybe her feelings started from the ones she had towards the other Akutagawa sibling, and it's still pretty confusing...

"Do you want us to be?"

"I– do you?" Higuchi deflects, despite herself, because she wants to say yes, but she doesn't want Gin to feel forced into saying yes herself...

"Yes, I do," Gin says, simple, without any hesitation, just like how she handles herself at work. Graceful, brave, unflinching... Higuchi wishes she could be more like that. "So if you do, too, then yes, we're dating."

"Then we are!" Higuchi says, excited despite her flustering, "We're dating, I mean– that is, I want to, so thank you for clarifying and everything and wow I'm really awkward, aren't I? Haha." She can't help her nervous tittering, but she's happy.

"You are," Gin agrees, merciless, making Higuchi pout... but not for long, because soon enough Gin's lips are on hers and it'd be quite impossible to pout when she feels this good. It also serves, of course, to shut Higuchi up, and she really thinks she wouldn't mind being shut up like this more often.

It's a bit scary, of course, having an attachment like this in the mafia, but Gin can take care of herself, and she's sure they'll keep it under wraps at work anyway. It's just smarter to do that, no matter how much Higuchi thinks it'd be nice to be able to hold Gin's hand sometimes at work. Maybe they can be a bit sneaky? Sneak kisses between meetings or missions...? Ahh, it's getting her embarrassed just thinking about it, she's sure Gin could kiss her senseless and just leave her like that, she seems like the teasing type, oh no, what has she gotten herself into...?!

And yet, Higuchi only scoots closer and rests their foreheads together briefly when the kiss breaks. She wants to say something about how happy she is, but she's sure Gin can tell by the smile on her face.

Gin's answering smile is all Higuchi could ever ask for.
